KINGSFORD — Kingsford’s No. 3 doubles duo Eli Wallis and Charlie Christesen fought through a tough tiebreaker to defeat Zander Birmingham and Jonah Holmberg 6-2, 4-6, 11-9 to help the Flivvers edge West Iron County 5-3 in a Great Northern Conference boys varsity tennis match Tuesday at Kingsford High School.

Kingsford’s other four wins were more straight forward. No. 3 singles Gavin Moore defeated Ethan Isaacson 6-2, 6-1 and No. 4 singles Brett Berglund upended James White 6-1, 6-2. In doubles, Isaac Nash and Ben Trevillian battled to beat Colton Holm and Sam Holroyd 7-5, 6-3 at No. 1 doubles and Hunter Hulkkonen and Cale Harris scored a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Lane Norman and Blake Ferrara at No. 4 doubles.

On the other hand, two of the Wykons’ three victories went the distance. No. 1 singles Matthew Dutcher defeated Toby Wilcox 6-4, 3-6, 10-5 and No. 2 doubles Jackson Strom and Logan McCord outlasted Jacob Saari and Morgan Sleik 6-3, 4-6, 6-2. West Iron’s Caleb Strom knocked off Niko Przeslakowski 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2 singles.

IRON MOUNTAIN 8, GWINN 0

IRON MOUNTAIN 7, GWINN 1

IRON MOUNTAIN — the Mountaineers swept shorthanded Gwinn in a Mid Peninsula Conference doubleheader matchup Tuesday. The doubleheader was caused by an early-season postponement.

In the opening matchup, Iron Mountain lost just seven games in the four matches played (the other four matches were forfeits).

No. 1 singles David Juul and Brenden LaPoint recorded 6-1, 6-1 victories, while Kaden Sheldon swept Ian Packard 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles.

Iron Mountain’s other victory came off the racquets of No. 1 doubles players Leanzei Kurt Adiao Ryan and Gerald Sampoll-Torres, who defeated Collin Olvena and Hunter Trepanier 6-2, 6-1.

The second match wasn’t much different, though Mountaineers’ coach Marcus Celello switched his lineup. Other than Gwinn’s John Detrick defeating Sampoll-Torres at No. 1 singles, Iron Mountain cruised again.

Sheldon (6-3, 6-2 at No. 2 singles), Reece Kangas (6-2, 6-0 at No. 3 singles) rolled to wins, while Andrew Larsen and Lucas Kassin knocked off Olvena-Trepanier 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 doubles.

The other four matches were forfeits.

“After some difficult weather throughout the season, we were finally able to face off against another conference opponent,” Celello said. “This was an important matchup for us, as we may face some of these same players on Thursday at Mid-Pens.

“Kaden Sheldon played well today, including moving up to 2 singles for his second match. With playing Gwinn twice on the same day, we were able to get guys opportunities to play in some different lineup spots. Hopefully, we can take these wins today and build momentum as we quickly approach postseason play.”
