Prep Track and Field: Northwoods Storm boys claim title at ND
FELCH TOWNSHIP — Led by Blake Smith’s three wins and Patrick Milan’s two, the Northwoods Storm team of Florence-Niagara emerged victorious in the battle for the boys championship on Tuesday at the North Dickinson Invitational.
Smith captured the 110 hurdles (16.1 seconds), the 300 hurdles (41.9) and the long jump (18-feet, 10-inches). Milan bested the field in the 100-meter dash (11.6) and the 200 (22.9).
The Northwoods Storm accumulated 107 points, far ahead of runner-up Stephenson, which finished with 79. Norway (74), North Central (69.5), Bark River-Harris (48.75), Republic-Michigamme (38), Forest Park (35), Superior Central (29), North Dickinson (29) and Wilson Hannahville Nah Tah Wahsh (13.75) rounded out the field.
Other local individual boys winners included Bryce Neuens of Norway, who won the 400 (53.0) and Lane Nehring of North Central, who topped the field in the shot put (38-6.25) and in the discus (108-3.75).
The North Dickinson 3,200 relay team of Colin LaFave, Tyler Fleming, Nick Conery and Spencer Kramer was victorious with a time of 10:09.9
In the girls event, Bark River-Harris left as champions, totaling 136 points. Stephenson (92), Northwoods Storm (83), North Dickinson (73), Norway (36), Carney-Nadeau (31), Forest Park (22), Superior Central (20.5), Republic-Michigamme (20) and North Central (6.5) also competed.
Individually, Norway’s Taylor Adams led local finishers with victories in the 800 (2:44) and the 3,200 (14:03.1), while Morgan Borchardt of Northwood Storm captured the long jump (14-9) and Abbey Tripp of Northwoods Strom crossed the finish line first in the 1,600 (6:28.1)
The North Dickinson 3,200 relay team of Madelyn Applekamp, Vanessa Lindholm, Mya Grunlund and Jessica Harwath ran a 11:42.1 to win that event.
SHAMION, SUNDELIUS PACE WIC
LAKE LINDEN — Danica Shamion and Landon Sundelius led the West Iron County girls and boys track teams to a second-place finish and a fifth-place finish, respectively, in the Lakes Early Bird Invitational on Tuesday in Lake Linden.
Shamion rolled through the sprints, winning the 100-meter dash (12.7), the 200 (27.0) and the 400 (1:02.2) for the Wykon girls who finished with 89.5 points. Houghton dominated the event with 175.5 points. The rest of the field included Calumet (77) in third, Lake Linden-Hubbell (60) in fourth, Baraga (50) in fifth, Hancock (39) in sixth, L’Anse (22) in seventh, Chassell (6) in eighth and Painesdale-Jeffers in ninth (2).
The Wykon girls also received a win from their 800 relay team of Cheyenne Ritchie, Haylie Murillo, Hailee Bradshaw and Callie Pellizzer. The group finished in a time of 2:05.
On the boys side, Sundelius logged the lone individual victory of West Iron by taking the 300 hurdles (44.8). The Wykons’ 1,600 relay team of Nick Mattson, Bradly Jochem, Kyle Carlson and Sundelius were also victorious with a time of 3:57.3.
