Johnson, Milan bring home medals
LA CROSSE, Wis. — For Florence freshman Kamdan Johnson, the 2022 WIAA Track & Field State Championships in La Crosse, Wisconsin, over the weekend was her first experience with the state limelight.
For Bobcat senior Patrick Milan, this year’s state meet was the end of a terrific prep career.
Both runners did their hometown proud as Johnson finished third in the Division 3 400-meter dash and Milan placed fourth in the Division 3 200-meter dash.
Johnson ran a 59.44 to win her third-place medal. Sophomore Kaylee Peterson of Ithaca/Weston won the state title with a time of 58.75 seconds, while freshman Mel Severson of Newman Catholic took second with a 58.86.
Meanwhile, Milan ran a 22.91 and finished just .02 seconds out of third place. The state champion, Brock Dortman of Howards Grove, finished in 22.47 seconds.
Milan, who finished sixth last year with a 23.90, wound up ninth in the preliminaries moved up five places in the final.
Florence senior hurdler Blake Smith competed in the 300 hurdles and finished 11th in the preliminaries with a time of 41.67 seconds. He finished one place out of the running for the final.
