NORWAY — The Norway Knights softball team left little doubt about its dominance of the Division 4, Regional 99 field by outscoring its two opponents 25-0, including a 10-0 victory over Bark-River Harris in the championship game Friday at Marion Park.
Kali Stanchina fired two shutouts to help the Knights win their second straight district trophy.
In a 15-0, 3-inning victory over Rapid River in the semifinals, the senior gave up just 1 hit and walked 2 while striking out 6. In the title game, Stanchina again surrendering just 1 hit, this time in 6 innings. She fanned nine and walked one.
Hannah Burklund (3-3) led the offensive explosion in the tournament opener with a pair of home runs — one over the right-center field fence and another inside-the-park homer — 5 RBIs and 3 runs scored. Burklund also tripled in the contest.
“See is seeing the ball quite well,” Norway coach Bob Bal said of his starting shortstop. “She’s a good hitter. And, the wind was blowing out. That’s what I told all the kids.”

Donna VanHolla (3-3) also knocked in a run, while Elizabeth Rometti (1-3) and Taylor Adams (2-2, 2 Rs) drove home 2 each.
VanHolla’s performance at the play also included a double in the game, while Adams hammered a triple.
In the district final, the Knights (25-8) scored 2 in the first and 2 more in the third to take a 4-0 lead. They added 1 tally in the fifth and put an end to the game in the sixth with 5 runs.
Once again, Burklund (2-4, 2 Rs, RBI) belted a home run in the game, this time over the fence at dead center. VanHolla (1-2, RBI) and Mackenzie Gilroy (2-3, 2 Rs, RBI) each smacked a double, while Averie Popp (2-4 R, R, 2 RBIs) drilled a single that plated the game-ending run.
For the Knights, Bal said winning the district title checked off the team’s second goal. The first was winning the Skyline Central Conference.
“We’ll put that one down and go after the next one,” he added. “You have, too.”
At the same time, the coach said he hopes his team enjoys the accomplishment of winning the district tournament.
“You don’t really understand how tough it is to win one,” he said. “You don’t buy these at Walmart or wherever. They’re hard to come by.”
The Knights won’t have to go far for their next contest, as they also will be hosting the Division 4 regional this coming weekend at Marion Park. Hancock and Pickford will lead off the day on Saturday at 10 a.m. before the Knights take on Ishpeming at about 1 p.m. The Hematites edged Superior Central 5-4 to advance.
The regional title game is set for 4 p.m. at Marion Park.
Bal said he hopes having the home field will give his team an advantage by allowing his players to stay with their normal routines, rather than having to travel.
“Keep it normal. That’s the big thing,” he said. “Then, we’ll see what happens.”
