Blues split with host Marquette
MARQUETTE – The Kingsford Blues Juniors got off to a fast start against host Marquette by blanking the Reds 11-0 in the first game of an American Legion doubleheader Tuesday.
The visiting Blues pounded out 10 hits and benefitted from four Marquette errors to win the clash in five innings.
Nic Novara and Gavin Grondin were both 2 for 4, scored a run and drove in a run for Kingsford in leading the Blues’ hit parade.
Trent McLain pitched all five innings and allowed just one hit, while walking four and striking out four for the win.
“Trent McLain pitched lights out,” said Blues coach Dan Brown. “The one hit he gave up was a pop up that dropped between the catcher and pitcher. He should have thrown a no-hitter.”
REDS 4, BLUES 1
Unfortunately, for the visiting Kingsford squad, the second game of the day didn’t go as well, with the Reds battling their way to a 4-1 victory.
The game was cut short due to weather, with the two teams able to play just three innings before action was halted.
Gavin Trevillian (1-2, R), Reed DeGroot (1-2) and Grondin (1-2, RBI) accounted for all three Blues’ hits.
Cole Baij took the mound for Kingsford, giving up four runs — three earned — on four hits and five walks, while also striking out two.
