Making a big splash: Trio leads local swim team at YMCA meet

BROWN DEER, Wis. — Northern Lights YMCA swim team wrapped up its season by sending 17 swimmers to the Wisconsin-Upper Michigan state championship meet held recently in Brown Deer, Wis.

The meet featured 21 YMCA teams from Wisconsin and Upper Michigan, totaling more than 900 swimmers overall.

“It was a great finale to our season,” NLYMCA head coach Aimee Tatangelo said. “A lot of our swimmers had their best times and finished strong.”

NLYMCA Dickinson had three trophy finishes at the final. Dominic Tatangelo (age 10) posted second in the 200-yard free style.

His 8-year-old sister Sierra was third in the 25-yard free and Greyson Williams, 7, took third in the 25-yard butterfly.

Individual medalists included Ella Murphy (age 9), seventh in the 50 freestyle and eighth in the 100 backstroke; Sierra Tatangelo (age 8), fourth in the 50 freestyle and eighth in the 50 backstroke; Dominic Tatangelo (age 10), fourth in the 100 freestyle and eighth in the 50 freestyle; Weston Trevillian (age 8), fourth in the 100-yard freestyle; Greyson Williams (age 7), sixth in the 25-yard freestyle; Sawyer Williams (age 8), seventh in the 100-yard freestyle and eighth in the 50-yard backstroke.

NLYMCA swimmers also collected medals in three relays. James Carlson (age 7), Weston Trevillian, Greyson Williams, and Sawyer Williams were fourth in the 100-yard free relay. Bryce Johnson (age 12), Tucker Williams (age 12) and Delta teammates Ben Olson and Jake Lanaville took sixth in the 200-yard free relay and eighth in the 200-yard medley relay.

Following the state meet, NLYMCA swimmers held a team banquet to celebrate the season’s successes.

Six new team records were set during the season. Those belonged to Sierra Tatangelo in the 8 and under 100 backstroke, 200 free and 500 free; Sawyer Williams in the 8 and under 100 backstroke; and Dominic Tatangelo in the 9-10 year old 200 backstroke.

Top point earners for the season were also recognized. In the 13 and over it was Allison Deuter with 502 points. In the 11-12 year olds it was Bryce Johnson (767) and Aubree Peterson (246). Dominic Tatangelo (645) and Ella Murphy (505) led in the 9-10 year olds. In the 8 and under it was Sawyer Williams (371) and Sierra Tatangelo (766).

Mikey Covitz and Catherine Majors were selected winners of the Shooting Star Award, an accolade that goes to new swimmers who show lots of potential, listen to their coaches, make changes and show a lot of improvement.

James Carlson and Lucy Krznarich were selected as Most Improved Swimmers. Swimmers of the Year by stroke were Greyson Williams and Clare Lundholm (Butterfly); Ella Murphy and Katarina Blair (backstroke); Weston Trevillian and Ella McLean (breaststroke); and Tucker Williams and Ellie Williams (freestyle).

Dominic Tatangelo, Ella McLean, Allison Deuter and Kailey Matuszweski shared Most Valuable Swimmer honors, and Bryce Johnson and Sierra Tatangelo earned All-Around Swimmer of the Year.
