Top cat: Florence overwhelms Three Lakes in 4 sets

FLORENCE, Wis. — Northern Lakes Conference play continued on Tuesday for the Florence varsity volleyball team as they faced off with Three Lakes in Florence.

After four sets of play, the Ladycats (8-7, 1-1) emerged victorious over the Bluejays 3-1 (17-25, 25-22. 25-19, 25-14).

“We started slow but came alive and prevailed against a conference foe,” Ladycats coach Teresa Chrisman said. (I’m) super happy we put it together and got the win in 4 sets. We just need to keep building and improving. We went back to the basics and focused on getting our passes on target and setting to the net.”

Ashlyn VanDenHeuvel returned to the Florence lineup from illness and made her presence felt.

“(It) was nice to have sophomore Ashlyn VanDenHeuvel back from illness,” Chrisman said. “She had some nice blocking at the net.”

Kamdan Johnson led the way defensively for Florence finishing with 21 digs in Tuesday’s clash. Johnson also chipped in with eight kills, five aces and one assist.

The Ladycats also received contributions from Sammie Demuri (20 assists, 4 kills, 9 digs), Robin Nicolls (9 digs, 3 aces), VanDenHeuvel (2 kills, 2 assists, 1 dig, 1 block), Naomi Millan (8 digs, 1 assist), Liv Millan (2 assists), Bella Millan (10 digs, 11 kills), Abby Novak (1 kill) and Vicky Peterson (9 digs, 7 kills, 3 aces).

“Bella Milan led all hitters with 10 kills and she had 100 percent serving on the night,” Chrisman added. “Her back row passing was beautiful and is always on target. Junior Robin Nicolls notched her first start at libero and had 100 percent serving, as well.”

Florence returns to action on Saturday at the Forest Park Invitational. Play begins at 9 a.m.

BADGERS 3, EAGLES 0

NIAGARA, Wis. — With homecoming festivities underway on campus, the Niagara varsity volleyball team did battle with Marinette & Oconto Conference foe Suring on Tuesday in Niagara.

The Badgers picked right up where they left off against the Eagles, as they rolled to a three-set victory (25-23, 25-10, 25-16).

Niagara improves to 9-7 overall and 5-1 in conference play.

“Tonight was the most consistent we have played throughout a whole match all year,” Niagara coach Maryellen Allred said. “We knew our mission, and we stuck to it until the end. Our defense and offense both stepped up to the plate. Senior Emma Broullire was key to us on defense both in digs and blocking.

“It was great to get a ‘W’ during our homecoming week.”

Broullire was a force at the net for the Badgers leading the team with five blocks. She also added two aces, four kills and 10 digs.

Niagara also received contributions from Elesia Sweig (6 assists, 5 digs), Rachael Walker (6 kills, 1 dig), Raegan Frappier (3 aces, 4 kills, 1 block, 11 assists, 7 digs), Grace Payette (1 ace, 3 digs), Bristol Sanicki (2 kills, 1 block, 1 dig), Mallory Sanicki (1 ace, 5 kills, 2 assists, 14 digs) and Emma Brasure (1 ace, 1 kill, 13 digs).

The Badgers are back in action on Tuesday as they head to Wausaukee, Wisconsin. Play starts at 5:30 p.m.
