Jets continue district run, downs Hannahsville

HANNAHVILLE — a 17-5 second quarter run led North Central boys basketball to a 61-40 victory over Hannahville in district semifinal action Wednesday.

The Jets started the run with a fade-away jumper by freshman Kaden Malone to put the Jets up 18-14. On the next Jets possession Malone pulled-up and hit a mid-range jumper to extend the lead to six.

Senior Hunter Robinson, who had a massive double-double with 23 points and 15 rebounds, knocked down a corner three to put the Jets up 23-14.

“Hunter was big for us tonight,” Jets coach Tyler Mercier said. “We knew we had the size advantage and Hunter was able to capitalize on that.”

After Robinson hit a pair of free throws for the Jets, junior Lane Gorzinski drove to the basket for the layup to give the Jets a 28-17 lead. With 1:10 to go in the first half. Robinson hit a floater in front of the basket to give the Jets a 30-19 lead.

The Jets capped off the run with :35 to go in the half as senior Jake Poquette hit a right-corner three to give the Jets a 33-19 lead at the half.

“It was definitely disappointing,” Hannahville coach Jon Bintner said. “We didn’t really have an answer for their big guy and he was able to kind of have his way”

The Jets picked up right where they left off in the third stanza, going on a 7-0 run including two layups by Robinson, who had 10 of his 23 points in the third quarter.

“I feel like I could have been better in the first half,” Robinson said. “I got it going a little more in the second half and we were able to pull away.”

Hannahville was led by junior Dashawn Metzger with 18 points including 7-of-8 from the free throw line and hit three 3-pointers. Junior Jayden Sagataw had 14 points for the Soaring Eagles.

North Central will host Superior Central in the district championship at 7 p.m. Friday.
