KINGSFORD — The Kingsford High School tennis courts were the site of a pair of boys tennis matches on Tuesday.

Both the Flivvers and the Iron Mountain Mountaineers took on Westwood in a triangular and both left with a 4-4 tie against the Patriots.

In the opening matchup, Kingsford recorded wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles as well as No. 2 and No. 4 doubles to forge the stalemate. In singles, Gavin Moore fought off Andrew Niemi 6-4, 6-4 in the top flight, while Landon Adam edged Patrick Klumpp 7-6 (2), 6-4 at No. 2.

Isaac Labouef and Jacob Crockford outlasted Xavier Grondz and Damian Grondz 7-6 (2), 6-4 at No. 2 while Brett Berlund and Beau Brackett knocked off Daevon Timmons and Caden Balzarini 6-1, 7-5 at No. 4.

“Big wins for Gavin Moore at No. 1 singles and Issac Labouef and Jacob Crockford at No. 2 doubles,” Kingsford coach Ryan Woodford said.

In the second matchup, the Mountaineers notched victories at No. 2 singles and No. 4 singles as well as at No. 1 doubles and No. 2 doubles.

In singles, Tyler Winch overcame Klumpp 3-6, 6-4, 8-6 at No. 2, while Brayden Kassin upended LeClair 6-2, 6-2 in the fourth flight.

In the doubles, Iron Mountain brother duo of Reece and Oskar Kangas defeated Frustaglio and Mahaffey 6-4, 7-6 in the No. 1 flight and Geno Schinderle and Dylan Lindgren posted a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Xavier Grondz and Damian Grondz at No. 2.

“It was fitting that the match ended in a four-all tie because our teams are evenly matched across several flights,” IM coach Keith Huotari said. “Some great competitive matches were played and could’ve gone either way.”

Huotari called Winch’s comeback win over Klumpp “the match of the day.”

“(Tyler) gutted out the last few games on a sprained ankle when it looked like he might not be able to finish,” the IM boss said. “Battling through adversity earned us the team tie as it was the last match to be completed.”
