IM soccer falls to Three Lakes, 3-1
IRON MOUNTAIN — The gray skies and rain clouds hanging over Mountaineer Stadium gave way long enough for the Iron Mountain girls varsity soccer team to get a game in against Three Lakes on Tuesday.
The Mountaineers struggled to get going and the Bluejays pulled through with a 3-1 win.
“We had zero energy,” IM co-coach Carly Lambert said, “Again, not getting after the ball. We need to get a little bit more aggressive. I think we came off of that really good game last Thursday … But they need to treat every team like they’re the same.”
Through 24 minutes of play, neither team had recorded a goal. That’s when the Bluejays made their move. They scored a quick goal to take a 1-0 lead.
Three Lakes added another goal, off of a rebound, to its tally three minutes later and it held a 2-0 advantage at halftime.
Iron Mountain came into the second half with a new found energy. It almost immediately resulted in points as a Bluejays’ foul set up a free kick.
Jaedyn Simonetti took the kick and sent it past the Three Lakes’ goalkeeper to the right corner at the 35:58 mark.
The Mountaineers trailed 2-1 at that point.
The Bluejays increased their lead to 3-1 with seven minutes to play and they would hold on for the win.
As the U.P. girls soccer finals approach, Lambert wants to see improvements in on-field communication and overall energy from her players.
“We have two more regular season games before the U.P.s, we have a lot of work to do,” Lambert added.
Iron Mountain closes out the home-portion of its 2024 schedule on Monday at Mountaineer Stadium against Houghton at 5 p.m.
The Mountaineers close out the regular season on Wednesday in Marquette.
