Nordics stumble but recover for SCC win
Trojans, Knights post VB victories
Through the first two sets, the North Dickinson Nordics looked poised for a routine victory over Skyline Central Conference foe Stephenson Tuesday evening at Carl F. Lemin Gymnasium in Felch Township.
A flurry of errors in the third set pushed the Nordics back on their heels, but they eventually recovered to post a 25-10, 25-15, 21-25, 25-22 win.
“We came out hot in the first two sets, but with a 20-15 lead in the third (we) found ourselves on the wrong side of nine consecutive errors, allowing Stephenson to gain momentum going into the fourth,” ND coach Taylor Johnson said.
The teams staged a back-and-forth battle in that fourth set with the Eagles (3-17-1) building a 20-16 lead. But the Nordics (11-9-2) found their resolve to win six of the next seven points and ultimately the match.
Aubrey Applekamp produced 13 kills and Cami Sleeter contributed 10 for the victors. Raina Ledzian dished out 27 assists, while Nadia Carpenter fired seven aces.
Defensively, Applekamp topped ND with four blocks and Dalaney Steinbrecher logged 23 digs.
“Stephenson played very competitively tonight,” Johnson said afterwards. “We’ve seen them twice in invitationals and they clearly were ready for us. I am proud of our resilience and preventing a fifth set.”
