Moore’s buzzer-beater gives Flivvers a road win

CALUMET — Kingsford’s Aubrey Moore collected a long rebound and drained a 16-foot shot at the buzzer to give the Flivvers a 39-37 win over Calumet on Thursday.

Moore led the Flivvers with 18 points, including 12 on 3-pointers. Her only points in the fourth quarter came on the game-winner.

“The game really was a defensive struggle,” said Kingsford coach Mike Cross. “We didn’t execute particularly well on offense but I think that had a lot to do with their defense.”

Cassie Olson added 11 points and Alyvia Kowalski scored 10 for the Flivvers.

With the game tied and seconds remaining, Kowalski drove to the basket but her runner rolled off the rim and ended up in Moore’s hands.

“I thought Alyvia Kowalski really stepped up tonight,” Cross said. “She drove the lane late and had a great look that didn’t go down. Still, without the drive, Aubrie doesn’t get the shot to win it at the end.

“Great play by Aubs to work her way to get that rebound,” he added.

The Flivvers (4-2) led 29-24 entering the fourth quarter, but Calumet (3-6) battled to the end.

“They are extremely scrappy,” Cross said. “(Calumet’s Jess) Anderson was everything I’d thought she’d be. If we don’t box her out, she’d get every rebound. She did late in the game.”

Kiirsi Johnson led Calumet with 12 points while Anderson and Kyla Strom scored 10 apiece.

“Avery Edwards was outstanding on defense and Madalyn Sleik gave us big minutes tonight,” Cross said. “Overall a great win on the road.”

Kingsford travels to Escanaba on Monday.
