Ortman paces Gallaudet with 28-point performance

Sophomore guard/forward Alex Ortman of Norway was nearly perfect on the court Wednesday night as he made 12 of 14 shots from the field to lead Gallaudet University to an 84-67 victory at Penn St.-Berks in a United East Conference men’s basketball game in Reading, Pa.

Gallaudet (2-12, 1-6 United East) earned its first conference win this season and the first conference victory for Bison head coach Sekoe White in his first season at the helm.

Ortman finished with a career-high 28 points to go with two assists and two steals. He went 3-for-4 from the free-throw line and was 1-for-2 from 3-point range.

GU led 33-30 at the half and then outscored the hosts by 14 points in the second half, 51-37. Ortman scored 15 of his 28 points in the final 18 minutes.

“Adversity revealed who we are. Our guys chose to keep competing and play for each other. We maintained our poise, which led to our first conference win. This is the standard we will continue to build on,” said White.

GU, in Washington, D.C., is a member of the Division 3 level of the NCAA.

Ortman has played in 14 games this season, including four as a starter, averaging 11.6 points and 3.4 rebounds per game.

In Division 1 Horizon League action, Cleveland State (7-14, 3-7) picked up its first road win of the season at first-place Wright State (12-8, 7-2).

The Vikings’ victory Wednesday snapped a seven-game winning streak for the Raiders.

Sophomore forward Dayan Nessah of Geneva, Switzerland, recorded a season-best 31 points on 9-of-13 shooting from the field for Cleveland State.

Foster Wonders of Iron Mountain added two points, two rebounds and a steal for the Vikings.

The visitors were coming off an 80-78 home win on Saturday over Youngstown State. Wonders, a senior guard, scored a season-high 12 points after going 2-of-3 from deep and 3-of-4 overall.

Cleveland State will have a week off before heading to Wisconsin, playing at Green Bay at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 30, and Milwaukee at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 1.

Oshkosh (14-3, 5-1 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference), ranked 16th in NCAA Division 3 by D3hoops.com, started the season series with Eau Claire (13-4, 2-4 WIAC) with a win after the Blugolds won both regular season contests and the WIAC Tournament first round matchup last year.

The teams traded the lead the lead nine times in the first half Wednesday. Oskar Kangas of Iron Mountain put the Titans up for the first time on a layup with 17:33 left in the opening half.

Kangas finished with five points as Oshkosh led for the entirety of the second half in the road win.

Kangas, a freshman reserve, is averaging 6.6 points and 3.5 rebounds per game.

The Titans will host UW-Stout in Kolf Sports Center at 5 p.m. Saturday for Alumni Night and the 10-year reunion of the 2016 NCAA Tournament team that reached the national tournament for the first time since 2003 by winning the WIAC Tournament. The appearance started a string of seven straight NCAA Championship runs that featured two trips to the national title game and the 2019 Division III title.

In Escanaba, Bay College (14-4, 3-1 Michigan Community College Athletic Association) led for most of the game, but weren’t able to pull away until the second half as they took down Alpena Community College (1-13, 0-4 MCCAA).

The Norse managed to keep it a multi-possession game in the second half Wednesday and gradually built a lead, stretching it to as many as 23 points midway through the second half.

Bay was led by Taveon Vann, a sophomore from Milwaukee, who had 22 points on 11 of 14 shooting. Bay’s William Kelley, a sophomore from Florence, Wis., ended with 12 points and three assists.

Kelley is averaging 9.4 points and 2.6 rebounds per game. He leads Bay with a free throw percentage of 85.7%, making 36 of 42 on the season.

The Norse will host Delta College (4-11, 1-3 MCCAA) at 3 p.m. Eastern time Saturday.
