MARQUETTE – Fresh off their first victory of the season earlier this week, Kingsford made it two in a row by coming from behind to knock off Marquette 6-3 Wednesday afternoon.
The Flivvers (2-9) fell behind 3-0 after the first but senior starting pitcher Jack Kriegl locked in after that, allowing just one more hit before exiting with two gone in the sixth. He escaped a bases-loaded jam in the second with a 1-2-3 double play and never allowed more than a single base-runner on in any inning after that.
“We started a little slow – in what has been a typical way for us – with giving too many free bases in the first inning, but then we settled in,” Flivvers head coach Joe Kriegl said.
Kriegl fanned eight while walking six. Junior Jonah Doenier picked up the save allowing just one more hit over the final inning and a third.
“We never felt comfortable with the three-run lead considering our recent history of experiencing innings where the wheels fall off,” Krielg said. “The good news in this one was that we were able to put the wheel or two that fell off in the first inning back on and drive the bus through the final inning and come away with the win.”
Kingsford tallied 10 hits, with Doenier and freshman Luke Rice each poking two of those. After getting a run via a bases-loaded walk to make it 3-1 in the second, it was Doenier who tied the game up in the fourth by drilling a double to center to score Rice and senior Jacob Deuter, who had both singled to open the inning.
Kriegl provided the go-ahead score later in the fourth when he chopped a ball to right side just past the pitcher and won the foot race to first. Kingsford’s final two runs came in on the next play as a dropped third strike combined with an error at first allowed both Kriegl and junior Bradlee Bottesi to score.
Marquette led off the bottom of the seventh with a single, but Doenier retired the next three hitters in a row with a grounder and two pop ups to preserve the victory.
Kingsford’s defense turned a second double-play to end a one on with one out threat in the fourth, as Doenier caught a line drive at short and fired to first to double off the runner.
Junior Noah Trulock doubled for a second straight game to open the Flivvers’ sixth but was gunned down at third for the final out of the inning attempting to tag on a fly to center. Bottesi, junior Logan Grondin and freshman Colin Olsen also tallied hits in the game.
“We are trying to focus on the little victories that need to be won during the course of a baseball game that lead you to the opportunity to come out on top in the end,” Kriegl said. “We had that opportunity tonight and capitilized.”
Kingsford’s junior varsity team improved to 6-0-1 with a 14-0 thrashing of the Sentinels. The Flivvers pounded out 13 hits, led by freshman Andrew Tomasoski’s four-hit, three RBI showing. Sophomores Cooper Kreski and Chace Jungles along with Olsen and freshman Gino Santoni all added doubles. Santoni was one two Flivvers with two hits, as freshman Cooper Myers also had a pair of singles and an RBI. Santoni got the win with six innings of three-hit ball with five strikeouts and four walks.
Kingsford is home this afternoon, hosting Menominee.
