HANCOCK – Kingsford, headed to face Gladstone this afternoon, put together its first doubleheader sweep of the season Friday afternoon, tackling Hanock 9-0 and 16-4.
The Flivvers, winners of three of their last four games, improved to 7-10 with the sweep.
“Tonight we got to see a total team effort,” Flivvers head coach Amy Brunswick said. “Everyone played a part, from the starting lineup to the dugout. We took it one pitch at a time and stayed in the moment — especially entering the second game. It was good to see us be able to keep the energy and momentum heading into the second game since we have been struggling putting it together after game one.”
Junior Mya Brunswick shut down the Bulldogs in the first contest, striking out 12 while allowing just two hits and one walk. The Flivvers never trailed in the game, taking a 3-0 lead after two, but it wasn’t until the seventh that they put the game out of reach with five runs.
Senior Jazzlyne Shaughnessy, juniors Kailey Matuszewski, Brunswick and sophomore Jolie Fleming all had two hits to pace the Flivvers’ 13-hit attack. Shaughnessy and Fleming, along with seniors Karley Trevillian and Adelyn Normand all poked doubles.
Kingsford scored in each of the first five innings to exert control of the second game, a five-run second and seven-run third putting things well out of reach for the Bulldogs.
Brunswick earned the win, with two more innings of work without a hit. Freshman Gracie Chartier worked the next three innings and was touched for six hits and three runs while whiffing three and walking two.
The Flivvers’ offense totaled another 11 hits from seven different batters. Fleming led the way with a 2-for-3 effort with three RBIs. Normand was 1-for-2 with two RBIs and a walk. Shaughnessy, who also had two hits, and junior Lychele DeGroot each slapped doubles.
There was no JV game Friday. After today’s games at Gladstone, the Flivvers head to Escanaba Tuesday before returning home Thursday to host Menominee.
