Snow trails groomed; Channing events planned

Outdoors report

IRON MOUNTAIN — Tri-County Snowmobile Club’s grooming team was out this week, covering the entire system after several inches of snow fell Tuesday.

The club reported conditions ranging from good to excellent. Its next meeting is 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 1, at Waucedah Township Hall in Loretto.

Conditions in Florence County, Wis., were rated as excellent by travelwisconsin.com, with cold weather helping to stabilize the trails.

Ice anglers were reporting a good bluegill bite, said Fay Whisler at Whisler Outdoors in Florence, Wis.

“Walleye and northern pike action has been steady,” she added. “Crappie and perch have been slow, but it’s starting to pick up.”

Sagola Township Sportsmen’s Club will host its 48th annual Tip-Up Town of the U.P. on Saturday, Feb. 5, on Sawyer Lake. Registration on the ice begins at 7 a.m., or sign up in advance at Midtown Bait & Tackle in Channing.

The club is making plans for a gun and knife show Feb. 11-12.

Tables for vendors remain available. Contact Paul Rotter at 906-542-3416 or protter@live.com.

Hours for the show at the clubhouse north of Channing on Sawyer Lake Road are 3 to 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 11, and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 12. Admission is $5; free for ages 12 and younger.

Marquette County is part of a public land review completed recently by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. The review process helps the DNR determine which parcels help provide public access to outdoor recreation while also protecting natural and cultural resources.

The public is invited to participate in virtual meetings Wednesday and Thursday to share their input on the outcomes of that review.

Wild Rivers Invasive Species Coalition will host invasive species training for landowners on Friday, Feb. 4, at Bay College West in Iron Mountain.

The catered event, which is free, is from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Fornetti Hall.

Attendees will learn to identify invasive species, gain insight into creating a management plan for their properties, and get hands-on practice for different management techniques of woody invasives. There will also be a virtual option.

Pre-registration is open at www.wrisc.org/events.
