Musky, grouse hunters enjoy the fall warm-up

IRON MOUNTAIN — Warmer weather has improved fishing while grouse hunters are taking advantage of declining cover as November draws near. “Anglers were reporting a mixed bag of bass, pike and walleye,” said Fay Whisler at Whisler Outdoors in Florence, Wis. “Musky fishermen are having some luck, but most catches are on the small side.” With the grouse season in full swing, hunters were reporting “lots of birds,” Whisler said. IRON MOUNTAIN — The Michigan Department of Natural Resources will offer a 45-minute webinar at 10:30 a.m. Eastern time Friday on the new Spark Grants program for outdoor public recreation projects. Eligible applicants can include regional or statewide organizations, units of government or public authorities and federally designated tribes. EAST LANSING­ — A partnership including the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the American Bird Conservancy is offering financial assistance to forest owners in the Upper Peninsula to improve habitat for at-risk bird species and other wildlife.
