Hoping the best for Trump

EDITOR: I sat this election out for the simple reason I didn’t like the policies of Kamala Harris and do not care for Donald Trump as a person. Now that Trump has been elected, my hope is he becomes the best president in the history of the country, for the simple reason we as a country will be better for it and as citizens will be blessed if so happens. Wishing negativity on our president, or anyone for that matter, accomplishes nothing. As far as the president’s faults as a man, I firmly believe any person can change for the better at any age. (I fail all the time, but every ...

Be thoughtful with your vote

Returning to my home in Iowa from a recent trip to my hometown of Iron Mountain, as I crossed the Mississippi River into Iowa, I noticed the welcome billboard with the latest state slogan, “Freedom to Flourish.” It gave me pause. Ultimately, it made me sad as I thought about it — Freedom for WHOM to flourish? Given our and other state’s recent history of stripping our freedoms and ever-increasing government involvement in and restrictions on our choices and everyday life, who exactly has the FREEDOM to FLOURISH? NOT the following people and institutions: NOT women, NOT ...

Thinking of how we pick leaders

EDITOR: We are less than a week out from picking a leader for our federal government. For us here in Dickinson County, we are far removed from the federal government. However, whoever is elected on Nov. 5, the country will follow that person for the next four years. I was thinking about a “What If” scenario. What would our county be like if our current county board chair, Henry Wender, acted and spoke like Donald Trump. How long would he have lasted in county government? Would we want our local official acting like this? A person coming up with all types of mistruths. He has ...

1-6-2021 not ‘a day of love’

EDITOR: The Jan. 6 invasion of the Capitol has recently been described as a “day of love.” This is unthinkable to those of us who watched on T.V. as an angry, out-of-control mob broke windows to gain entry into the Capitol. We would not call it love, rather a day of hate and chaos. This certainly was not love of country. There was no concern or love for those working there. There are deaths attributed to this attack, along with the trauma of those who had to find a safe place in fear of the mob. I thought to myself, this can’t possibly happen in our country, but it did. If ...

Misleading ads against Bohnak

That’s it! I can’t take it anymore, so I have to speak out about the Michigan 109th State House District race. We have all been inundated by political ads. The mud-throwing ads attacking Karl Bohnak are especially disturbing. The ads get very personal. One of the ads says when speaking about Karl Bohnak that “It is sad to a see a nice man go bad.” Another ad infers that “Karl and his panel of radical politicians” could impact the abortion rights in Michigan. The ads are amateurishly produced and have many misleading statements. The ads that infer Bohnak or any other ...
