Election results prompt call to pray for America

America’s a great country, but she’s dying. And we have only ourselves to blame. The day after the election I woke up, wept, and then said my daily prayer for our country. It’s unfathomable to me how people can continue to elect leaders that are spending us into bankruptcy, dismantling our police forces, decriminalizing thugs and destroying our hard-won energy independence. We grovel for gas and oil from countries that neither like nor respect us and punish our own natural resource providers. People can’t afford groceries or gas. Holiday event fosters positive relationships

The relationship between children and law enforcement is a very important part of building strong communities. The Shop with a Cop event, which takes approximately 30 kids from Florence and Dickinson counties out for dinner and holiday shopping for their families, is one of the ways local law enforcement fosters these positive relationships. Looking back on the election

Not everyone who voted in last week’s election had the outcome they had hoped for. That is the way it goes. However, all Dickinson Country residents who did turn out to vote — either in person or by absentee ballot — should be assured that their vote was counted, recounted and certified as it was written. We should all be grateful to County Clerk Carol Bronzyk, her staff, the poll workers in every precinct, and the Dickinson County Canvass Board for their efforts in making our democracy work for all of us. Vote ‘yes’ on Proposal 3

The letters thus far that have appeared in the Daily News against Proposal 3 have, in their zeal to defend the rights of fetuses, forgotten entirely about the fact that the people who gestate those fetuses also exist and have rights. In a contest between the two, why should pregnant people always come in second? Forced pregnancy is a violent act. To demand that any human’s body is at the disposal of another is very close to how to define both rape and slavery. Disabled people are consistently overlooked in America, but maybe nowhere so much as in the discussion of reproductive rights. As a disabled woman, I am writing to ask your readers to please consider some of the following thoughts, and then vote “yes” on Proposal 3 in the Nov. 8 election. People with disabilities still do normal things: we fall in love, many of us marry, some of us dream of families. But our bodies aren’t always on board with that last plan.
