Youth Camp ‘one of the best ever’

EDITOR: This was the 78th summer for the Iron County Youth Camp, Camp Batawagama. It was great to see all our campers return in 2022 after having to cancel due to the COVID epidemic in 2020 and 2021. This summer was very successful and according to many of our staff members, “one of the best ever!” We were able to provide the youth of Iron County and surrounding areas with six full weeks of Youth Camp, while maintaining the same traditional programs that have made Batawagama so popular over the years. Our five water safety instructors were busy teaching swimming levels that ranged ...

Vote ‘yes’ on Proposal 3

Americans pride themselves on living in a land where the right to “life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness” is enshrined in our most cherished documents. But we cannot claim that there is any truth to this doctrine if the medium through which we actually live that life, our very physical bodies, are not uniquely under our own personal decision-making control. For roughly 50% of the country, this is what is at stake with Proposal 3 in the upcoming election. Will we allow those with the capacity to become pregnant the chance to dictate whether that is a bodily outcome they desire? Or ...

Another reason to vote ‘no’ on Prop 3

A constitution is the set of rules about how a country or state should be governed. It includes the framework, and powers of the government along with the fundamental rights of the people. It is a guarantee of civil rights and liberties. Contrast this with laws. Laws are a set of rules that govern the behavior of the people of the land. They regulate the actions of citizens and guarantee morality in action (however the populace defines that morality). Laws are debated, rigorously, and can involve compromise. Civil rights and liberties, at least in our system, are inalienable and ...

Prop 3 not ‘confusing’

Suggestions that Proposal 3 on the upcoming Michigan ballot are “confusing” are completely absurd. Have people who think this even read it? It’s very clear about what it intends to do. Prop 3 will give to Michigan what the Roe v. Wade decision once gave America: an assurance of reproductive rights balanced against fetal viability. The Roe decision understood that abortion rights are about gradually more competing interests. A first trimester pregnancy is not, despite the language in some recent letters, a baby. For the first eight weeks, it’s scientific term is an embryo, and ...

Supports Murray for WI Assembly

A local candidate for you who isn’t a career politician is what most of us say we want. There is one candidate like that in the race for state assembly and it isn’t the incumbent. Jeffrey Mursau has been in state and local office since Bill Clinton’s first inauguration. The overwhelming majority of his funds since July 1 come from out-of-district donors, political parties or PACs. He will serve his political party before he serves you. Since July 1, Ben Murray has received almost 10 times as much in donations from people who live in his district. He has the support of teachers, ...

Fix problems in the voting booth

Please do not pick on those folks who followed Donald Trump. These folks were duped and that can happen to nearly anyone. Now with the mountains of evidence pouring forth publicly, some of them are beginning to see the real light and your rubbing salt in their wounds is not going to help and in fact is kind of mean. Just say nothing and let them fix it in November in the voting booth. They can go in there and in private come back onto the paved section of life’s road. Now, not everyone is seeing the truth, and in fact even if they do, they can’t admit it. Might be pride or just ...
