Biden-Harris Administration hurts the nation

EDITOR: White supremacy is the belief that white people are superior to those of other races and thus should dominate them. I would argue that the Biden-Harris Administration is the embodiment of this ideology. Take for instance their support of Roe vs Wade. At least 19 million U.S. Black babies have been aborted since 1973 and account for 40% of U.S. abortions, according to Planned Parenthood. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen actually said that “eliminating the right of women to make decisions about when and whether to have children would have very damaging effects on the ...

Thoughts on Jan. 6 hearings

I have been watching the Jan. 6, 2021, investigation by the House of Representatives Committee. Every word is under a sworn oath. There are people who oppose that sworn testimony and have had hundreds of chances to say their opposing view in various courtrooms across the country, also under oath and also in danger of perjuring themselves should they be lying. None of them have taken that opportunity to present that opposing view. Why will they not speak under oath as the people appearing before the House Committee are doing? I will leave you to think about that and come to your own ...

How much should they be paid?

EDITOR: Recently I read with interest a front page article in the Daily News about the City Council of the City of Iron Mountain considering a ballot measure addressing pay for its City Council members. Several months ago, I also read about the Dickinson County Board of Commissioners grappling with the same issue. How much should our local elected officials be paid for their services while in office? There is no question that they should receive fair compensation for the essential and mostly thankless work that they do while in office. My reason for addressing this issue is to ...

Been there, done that

And now we learn that 19 little kids in a Texas elementary school were slaughtered by a young man using an AR-15. What can one say? Been there, done that. Echoes of Sandy Hook. Echoes of the NRA stranglehold they have on so many greedy Congressmembers. The awful truth is that an AR-15 was the weapon of choice in this and numerous other mass shootings. How many more massacres have to happen before we realize that this weapon should not be available for general purchase? So now we hear endless TV reports about the need to end gun violence in our schools and supermarkets and churches ...

Need to address US mental illness

I still love to hear Anne Murray sing “A Little Good News” but sadly, good news stories are far and few between. In my wildest dreams, I never would have imagined such hate, violence and plain evil that has taken over our country. I used to long for “simpler days”; now I’m praying for “peace-filled days.” I can’t watch the news, read the newspaper or turn on the radio without non-stop coverage of mass murders in schools and churches, people literally thrown off platforms into oncoming subways. Just last night I watched a young man purposely veer his car into the path ...

Is death tolerated?

An editorial in the May 23 edition of The Daily News asked the question, “COVID-19, shootings: Is mass death now tolerated in America?” It seems to me that the answer is a resounding yes. Years ago that was not the case. Life was sacred, respected and murders and attacks on life were rare. All that has changed in recent years. Today death is not only tolerated, it is accepted, legalized and even encouraged be it by abortion, infanticide, assisted suicide, or other ways. As Albert Schweitzer, the French humanitarian and 1952 Nobel Prize winner said, “When you devalue one life, ...
