What does the flag represent?

EDITOR: Is the American flag representative of the ideals set in the preamble of the Constitution? The preamble stresses the belief that all people are equally entitled to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. It seems to me that tribalism and gross inequity in opportunity and access to the means of ensuring those things — through voting, education, respect for those different than you in some way, and support when needed — are toxic to democracy and the flag of our country. I ask this question because the flags that were waved in the Jan. 6 assault on our Capitol were, ...

Sen. McBroom deserves respect

EDITOR: State Sen. Ed McBroom recently released his eight-month-long report on voter fraud concerns for the state and found no fraud occurred. Yet the past president will not acknowledge the report and posts the senator’s name and phone number online, and informs his followers to call the senator. (In other words, harass him.) Donald Trump was taught by infamous lawyer Roy Cohn to never admit defeat, no matter if you are defeated. But here we have some people who are going to believe Trump over Sen. McBroom, who from what I understand after doing some research is a man whose ...

Veterans groups need new blood

To fellow veterans: Veterans groups in area communities need participation from National Guard and Reservists, veterans of all wars, Legionnaires, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Vietnam Veterans of America. This includes arranging an American Legion Honor Guard for “Taps” for the departed, flags for veterans’ families, patriotic displays for Armed Forces Day on May 15, Memorial Day events, Flag Day ceremonies on June 14, marching in Fourth of July parades and operating food booths at events, handling raffles and silent ...

Group applauds committee report that supported election results

Alger County Action has awaited the results of the Michigan Senate Oversight Committee’s months-long investigation into the integrity of the November 2020 general election results with skepticism. Our organization is not often in agreement with our state Sen. Ed McBroom (R-Waucedah Township) who, as chair of the committee, led the investigation. In the past, Sen. McBroom has aligned himself with those who baselessly insist that the election was fraudulent. We are surprised and relieved by Sen. McBroom’s conclusions from the careful and thorough investigation. In the statement and ...

Bergman votes wrong on statues

On June 29, the U.S. House of Representatives voted to pass H.R. 3005 which directs the Joint Committee on the Library to replace the bust of Roger Brooke Taney in the old Supreme Court Chamber of the U.S. Capitol with a bust of Thurgood Marshall and to remove certain statues from U.S. Capitol areas that are accessible to the public of individuals who voluntarily served the Confederate States of America from display in the United States Capitol, and for other purposes. The vote was 285 for to 120 against. Need we ask how U.S. Rep. Jack Bergman voted? He was against the removal of ...
