Free showing of ‘February’ on Tuesday

IRON MOUNTAIN — The Braumart will have a free screening of the film “February,” by Nathan Deming at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

“February” is the second installment of the “Year Project,” a film series based on each month of the year, all set in Wisconsin.

Nathan Deming is an award-winning Wisconsin filmmaker originally from Tomah, now based in Los Angeles. He studied at the London Film School and his 2020 indie feature “Speaking in Tongues” is available on Amazon and Tubi.

“February” is about a recent Mexican immigrant, Miguel (David Ezekiel Duran), who struggles to fit into a small town in Wisconsin in winter until he discovers ice fishing.

“Suddenly, ice fishing, a pursuit that feels at once foreign and familiar to Miguel, offers him a sense of unity, and it is through these small, nuanced moments where Deming’s genius lies, drawing viewers into the minutia of everyday life and turning simple acts into reflective moments of human connection and conflict,” Asbah Shah wrote about the film in Shepherd Express.

This independent film is getting good buzz after a big win at the Wisconsin Film Festival, where “February” earned the Golden Badger Award and the Audience Choice Award.

“February” stars Duran, Nayeli Hernandez, Erick Inestroza and Richie Gordan. It was produced by Adam Stunkle, with cinematography by Leo Purman and production design by Maria Medrano. It was written and directed by Deming.

“‘February’ feels like a soundless snowfall … bathed in the quiet, relentless pulse of winter,” Shah wrote in Shepherd Express.

“The Braumart is excited to support regional filmmaking and to host this screening of ‘February’ Tuesday, followed by a Q and A,” said Seth Anderson, a filmmaker and Braumart board vice president.

Starting at $2.99/week.
