Prom Dress Swap planned this weekend

Plenty of dresses and other accessories will be available at the 11th annual Prom Dress Swap at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain on Saturday and Sunday.

Upcoming events at the Dickinson County Library include:

— The March Reading Challenge runs through March 31 at all Dickinson County Library branches.

This program encourages teens and adults to set their own goals on how many books they can read in one month; those who achieve their goal will be entered in a prize drawing. Simply register at any library branch to receive a bookmark to record a goal. Return the bookmark by March 31 for a chance to win.

Today

— Tech Connect, 4 p.m., Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain.

This monthly program offers kids in third through eighth grades a chance to explore different design and building technologies. March sessions will focus on Snap Circuits, which give kids a hands-on introduction to the world of electronics. Kids can take part in challenges that include building motors, lights and more.

Thursday

— Directed Discussions, 2 to 4 p.m., North Dickinson Branch Library in Felch Township.

This is an opportunity to speak with Library Director Megan Buck in an open forum. Those attending can bring questions, suggestions, or concerns regarding library services. No appointment is necessary.

— Tech Connect, 3:30 p.m., Solomonson Branch Library in Norway.

Saturday

–11th annual Prom Dress Swap, 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain.

The event allows teens in ninth through 12th grades to choose and keep a prom dress free of charge.

No donation is required to attend the swap or to take home a dress. However, anyone who donates an item will receive a ticket granting them admission to the first hour of the swap Saturday. Ticket holders must be teens in ninth through 12th grades. Those who do not donate may attend and choose a dress at any time after the first hour.

The library will accept donations of gently used and clean prom dresses, shoes, and accessories at all library branches through Thursday. The library in Iron Mountain will accept donations through Friday. They appreciate dresses on a hanger, and mark the size if the tag is missing.

New members are always welcome at the monthly book clubs. This month’s book is “The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry” by Gabrielle Zevin. Thursday, March 12

Children in kindergarten through second grade will learn that science is both educational and fun in this monthly program that introduces simple STEM concepts through hands-on activities. The library will feature a new theme each month.

Friday, March 13

— Great Start Family Celebration, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., Our Place Community Center, 217 W. Hughitt St. in Iron Mountain.

The library will have a table at this fun family event with a children’s craft and information about library services.

Saturday, March 14

— Dr. Seuss Celebration, 10:30 a.m. at the Solomonson Branch Library in Norway and 1 p.m. at the Iron Mountain library.

Enjoy some classic Dr. Seuss stories, as well as crafts and activities, at this party for children in pre-school through second grade. Plus, a special guest reader will be at the Iron Mountain library session.
