CRYSTAL FALLS — The Crystal Falls District Community Library is getting ready to launch two summer reading programs — Summer Scares and Tails and Tales.

“Lots of exciting things are happening at our library,” Library Director Evelyn Gathu said.

Summer Scares is a virtual book club where participants read three horror novels — one for each month of the summer.

The group then will meet virtually on Zoom to discuss each book — with the book’s author participating.

The book club has three levels: middle school, high school and adult.

Anyone interested in participating can check out the nine selections picked for 2021 at joomla.uproc.lib.mi.us/CrystalFalls/, and click on the Summer Scares brochure.

For the middle and high school groups, each book will also come with a make-and-take spooky craft project to complete and share during the meetings.

This is the second time the library has offered Summer Scares, Gathu said.

The Tails and Tales Summer Reading Program features story hours, craft projects and events for six different age levels — babies, toddlers, preschoolers, children age 5 to 8, children 9 to 12, and teens and adults.

Tails and Tales Summer Reading Program will run for six weeks, from June 2 through July 31.

Some of the planned activities include: the babies will play stack the cats, toddlers will create fingerprint farm animals, preschoolers will make a felt goldfish bowl pizza box play set, ages 5 to 8 will host a stuffed animal sleepover, ages 9 to 12 will dissect owl pellets and teens to adults will create folded towel fish.

Some of the guest speakers lined up are Dr. Cheryl Matuszewski, a veterinarian at the Apple Blossom Pet Clinic, and Ben Ryan, prevention specialist from Communities that Care, and his dog Jasper.

An informational brochure for each reading level can be found on the library’s website at joomla.uproc.lib.mi.us/CrystalFalls/.

Parents are asked to call or email to register their child each week for the story time.

“That way we can keep the groupings very small and add more if needed to keep everyone safe,” Gathu said.

The Crystal Falls District Community Library is open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays.
