Sailor’s sketch

An Illinois woman would like to connect with the family of a sailor who served on the U.S.S. Newcomb during World War II, presumably from the Dickinson County area, and with the last name of Johnson. Carol Forestier of Rochester, Ill., recently found some sketches of her father, Richard T. Gillespie, who served as a machinist on the ship. “Though sketches of my dad are signed ‘by Johnson,’ one in particular is believed to be signed as either Johnson, E.L., or Johnson, F.L.,” Forestier said. “One of the drawings is of the Ford Plant on the Menominee River, Iron Mountain, March 1944, so we thought it may possibly be that sailor Johnson hailed from there originally.” Forestier’s address is 712 W. Main, Rochester, IL, 62563 or forestiercarol1@gmail.com.
