Crystal Falls library to offer two summer reading programs

CRYSTAL FALLS — The Crystal Falls District Community Library is hosting two summer programs.

The Oceans of Possibilities Summer Reading Program runs for six weeks from June 20 to July 30. Each week has a theme: Ocean Week; Pirates and Treasure Week; Lighthouses, Boats and Fish Week; Mermaids, Seashells and Pearls Week; Shark Week; and Deep-Sea Week.

From June 13 to June 18, patrons can come in to pick up a starter pack. Those who participate must register for the program by May 31. They have seven different levels of the program: babies, toddlers, pre-kindergartners, children ages 5 to 8, children 9 to 12, teens/adults, and family nights. For the babies, toddlers and pre-kindergartners, they offer a story hour twice weekly during the six-week run. During the story hours the children will have several stories read to them and they also will have crafts and activities.

Children age 5 to 8 and children 9 to 12 will also have books read to them, and each level will have a variety of different kinds of activities such as crafts, writing, STEAM, construction, jewelry making, study on important scientists, along with learning how to tie sailors’ knots. Teens and adults will be making a mood tracker, jellyfish lanterns, mermaid sugar scrub, and marbled mugs. They will also be decorating treasure chests and cakes for an ocean food decorating challenge. The Family Nights include an Ocean Trivia Night, a Deep-Sea Movie Night, a Bermuda Triangle Escape Room, a Zoom call with an oceanographer, an Asian seafood cooking demo with Chef Ming Louie, and a learning about Geocaching Night.

Summer Scares is a program that is developed by the Horror Writers Association, United for Libraries, Booklist and Book Riot. The Summer Scares Committee selects nine horror books for the program each year: three selections for adults, three for young adults, and three for middle-grade readers. The library forms a book group for each age level. With monies obtained from a Michigan Library Services and Technology Act Grant, the library buys several copies of each of the books for the book club members to read and they meet each month in the summer to discuss the book. Often the authors of the books will join in by Zoom.

Those interested in joining either or both program, should call the library at 906-875-3344 to register, or email them at egathu@crystalfallslibrary.org.

Starting at $3.50/week.
