Library announces activities
IRON MOUNTAIN — The Dickinson County Library’s schedule of upcoming events includes:
— Splish, Splash, Read. At Out to Lunch: Thursdays through Aug. 11, during the Out to Lunch concerts in the parking lot across from the Iron Mountain library.
They will have a table at the Out to Lunch concert series with fun activities for children such as sidewalk chalk. Once a month, they’ll also offer kits that include a water-themed craft and a free book. Sponsored by Mary Endelman.
— Stories at Sea: Today, 10:30 a.m. at the library in Iron Mountain; Thursday, 10:30 a.m. at the North Dickinson Branch in Felch Township; Tuesday, June 28, 10:30 a.m. at the library in Iron Mountain; Thursday, June 30, 10:30 a.m. at the Solomonson Branch in Norway.
These storytime sessions for children from newborns through age 5 feature stories, songs, and crafts to build early literacy. Each week has a different water-based theme, such as ocean animals, boats, sharks, mermaids, and pirates. No registration required. Sponsored by Family Chiropractic Clinic, P.C.; Dickinson Pediatric Clinic; and Dr. Dale and Lucy Shampo.

The library is participating in this summer’s MiLibraryQuest, in which kids in sixth through 12th grades must find clues hidden on various Michigan library websites to solve a crossword puzzle with a theme of “Treasures of the Deep.” For more details on how to participate, go to https://milibraryquest.wixsite.com/quest1/current-quest. Three participants from the Dickinson County Library will win a prize.
— Ocean Exploration Stations: today, 1 p.m. at the Solomonson Branch; Wednesday, 1 p.m. at the library in Iron Mountain; and Thursday, 1 p.m. at the North Dickinson Branch.
Enjoy hands-on STEM activities about the ocean in this program for children in preschool through second grade. Sponsored by Hall Orthodontics.
— Island Crafts Extravaganza: Today, 4 to 6 p.m. at the library in Iron Mountain; and Thursday, June 23, 4 to 6 p.m. at the Solomonson Branch.
Enjoy an afternoon full of island-related crafting for kids in third through eighth grades. Stations will be set up for rock painting, sand necklaces, wooden sea life painting, and sea life scratch art. Sponsored by Dr. Daniel and Christine McMahon.
— Shipwrecks of the Great Lakes: Wednesday, 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the library in Iron Mountain.
Author Mikel Classen will share interesting facts and stories about the various shipwrecks on the Great Lakes. For teens and adults.
— Gamers’ Club: Monday, June 27, 4 p.m. at the library in Iron Mountain.
Participants can choose from a variety of Xbox games which game they would like to play together. For kids in third through eighth grades.
— 101 Things that Happened on the Mackinac Bridge: Monday, June 27, 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the library in Iron Mountain.
Michigan Notable Book winner Mike Fornes will share with teens and adults historic, tragic, and hilarious facts about the Mackinac Bridge. Sponsored by Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home.
— Reading is a Hoot: Tuesday, June 28, 1 p.m. at the library in Iron Mountain.
Phyllis Carlson and her owl, Journey, will teach children in preschool through fifth grade all about Michigan owls. Weather permitting, they will play “owl and mouse” in the courtyard. Sponsored by the Friends of the Library.
— Irish Immigrants in Michigan: A History in Stories: Wednesday, June 29, 1 to 2:30 p.m. at the library in Iron Mountain.
Retired teachers Pat Commins of Ireland and Elizabeth Rice of Michigan have compiled true stories of Irish immigrants to Michigan in the 1800s — one story from each of the state’s 83 counties. Everyone is welcome to come to listen to the story of this county and others.
