IRON MOUNTAIN –The Dickinson Area Chamber of Commerce welcomed Dunkin’ to the chamber and Iron Mountain.

The open house event was celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by chamber ambassadors and Dunkin’ staff.

Iron Mountain is this group’s 50th store location and already one of its most productive. While the store first began serving April 5, the official opening was two days later. Stephanie Wicklund of Iron Mountain is the local general manager and the store employs 28 people.

The Iron Mountain location sells about 300 dozen donuts a day — literally 3,600 donuts every day.

The franchise owners started 12 years ago with two stores in the Wisconsin Dells area, Regional Supervisor Kevin Kane of Wausau, Wis., said at the open house. The Iron Mountain store had the fourth-largest grand opening among the 50 stores. The franchise operation now has three in the Upper Peninsula — Marquette and Menominee-Marinette, Wis., are the other two — along with locations in Wisconsin and northern Minnesota.

The first Dunkin’ Donuts began in 1948 as a donut and coffee restaurant in Quincy, Mass., called Open Kettle. Founder William Rosenberg served donuts for 5 cents and premium cups of coffee for 10 cents. Rosenberg renamed the restaurant Dunkin’ Donuts in 1950. In 1955, the first Dunkin’ Donuts franchise opened, and in just 10 years, the number of restaurants had grown to more than 100. There now are 9,000 Dunkin’ stores nationwide. Dunkin’ is the largest purchaser of coffee in the United States.

Dunkin’ is at 1009 S. Stephenson Ave. in Iron Mountain, at the intersection with East F Street. Store hours are 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. seven days a week, 365 days a year.
