GREEN BAY, Wis. — Struggling retailer Shopko has announced it will close its remaining 120 stores, including locations in Kingsford and Iron River.

The last day for all the sites will be June 16. Other stores in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula include Ishpeming and Manistique.

In a news release, the Ashwaubenon, Wis.-based retailer said it was unable to find a buyer for the business. It instead will begin “an orderly wind-down of its retail operations beginning this week.”

The investment firm Gordon Brothers will oversee a liquidation of the company’s assets that is expected to be completed in 10 to 12 weeks, the company stated in the release.

“This is not the outcome that we had hoped for when we started our restructuring efforts,” CEO Russ Steinhorst said. “We want to thank all of our teammates for their hard work and dedication during their time at Shopko.”

Shopko said it still is evaluating options for its optical business, which it had previously said it hoped could stay open as stand-alone offices.

Shopko first announced plans to close 39 stores in December before expanding the list to more than 100 stores in January when it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. In February, it added another 139 locations to be shuttered by mid-May, including full-size stores in Escanaba and Marquette.

Shopko began with a store in Green Bay in 1962.
