Church groundbreaking
Members of the First Presbyterian Church of Florence and MBM Construction broke ground for the new addition of the church. From left are Jan Roberts, Pat Christian, Jim Churchill, Steve Phillips, MBM construction, Dennis Christian, Ken Johnson, Karen Wertanen and Debra DeMuri. Originally completed on Nov. 16, 1880, the new addition will be two floors and will include a pastor’s office, a conference room, a secretary’s office, handicap bathrooms, handicap access to the sanctuary and basement fellowship hall, storage area and multipurpose room. The entrance to the building will change from Norway Avenue to the new addition on Lake Street. Following construction of the addition, renovation will occur in the fellowship and kitchen areas. The construction and renovations are able to be done through the generous bequest from the Estate of Melba Novak. Melba was a life-long member of the church, passing away at the age of 95. Memorial monies will also help with the renovations to the basement fellowship hall.
