Authorities take man into custody in Marinette County woods

SILVER CLIFF, Wis. — No one was injured Monday when an armed suicidal man was taken into custody after an overnight search near McClintock Park in Silver Cliff, Wis.

The Marinette County Sheriff’s Office was contacted Sunday evening about a 52-year-old Athelstane, Wis., man who had made suicidal statements to a friend via text message, according to a release from Marinette County Sheriff Jerry Sauve.

Deputies found the man’s car parked at McClintock Park. Partial boxes of ammunition were reportedly found in the vehicle.

Deputies searched deep into the woods for the man before backing off to request help and gear.

By midmorning Monday, the man was found more than two miles from where he had parked his car and eventually put down his long gun and pistol. Deputies transported the man out of the woods by snowmobile, the release stated.

The matter remains under investigation.

Deputies were assisted by the Florence and Oconto County sheriff’s offices, wardens with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and Silver Cliff Rescue.
