DCHS, YMCA announce new restrictions
IRON MOUNTAIN — Dickinson County Healthcare System and the Northern Lights YMCA of Dickinson County both announced significant changes Friday to avoid the potential spread of the coronavirus.
Dickinson County Memorial Hospital will allow only limited visitation for patients “until the COVID-19 virus situation is stabilized,” according to a news release from Dickinson County Healthcare System.
Under the new restrictions put in place Friday, all visitors must be age 19 or older and have no symptoms of cold or flu.
Additional limitations by patient type include:
— Terminally and critically ill patients: Immediate family, spouse or significant other only;
— Pediatric patients: Parents and or caregivers only;
— Obstetrics patients: Spouse, significant other or birth coach only;
— All other patients: Spouse, significant other or caregivers only.
The YMCA in Iron Mountain informed members the facility will not admit anyone of school age — kindergarten through 12th grade — and has cancelled all classes and programs, including afterschool programs, from Monday through April 5.
No day passes will be sold to that age group, either, the YMCA stated in its message to members.
The YMCA child care center will remain open and the rest of the building will be accessible to members 18 and older.
“We are committed to providing the safest possible environment for children and adults in our programs and services, and that includes taking the necessary steps to help prevent the spread of illness,” the YMCA stated. “Our decision to limit access to children in grades K-12 is in accordance with a mandate issued by the governor.”
The YMCA also has significantly stepped up disinfection of all contact surfaces in its building at 800 Crystal Lake Blvd.
“While no one can predict with certainty how severely COVID-19 will impact the United States and our local communities, we are monitoring the situation and preparing alternate plans if the condition worsens,” the YMCA statement concluded. “We will keep everyone updated with information as it develops.”
