IM man pleads not guilty in high-speed chase

GENE HERBERT

IRON MOUNTAIN — An Iron Mountain man arrested in November after a high-speed chase that began in Breitung Township and ended in Wisconsin pleaded not guilty Tuesday in Dickinson County Circuit Court.

Gene Hebert, 41, is charged with possession of a dangerous weapon, a felony punishable by up to five years in prison; assaulting, resisting or obstructing a police officer and fourth-degree fleeing a police officer, both two-year felonies; and operating without a license, a 90-day misdemeanor.

Hebert is charged as a four-time habitual offender and could serve up to life in prison if convicted.

Hebert filed a waiver of arraignment and was not required to appear in court in person. The not guilty pleas were entered on his behalf by Dickinson County Circuit Judge Mary Barglind.

According to the criminal complaint, deputies with the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office attempted to stop Hebert’s vehicle in Breitung Township on Nov. 16.

Hebert reportedly refused to stop and instead exceeded the posted speed limit by 20 miles per hour and crossed into oncoming traffic while fleeing into Wisconsin.

Once in Wisconsin, Hebert came to a stop but still failed to comply with multiple commands from deputies, the complaint stated.

Hebert reportedly had metallic knuckles in his possession at the time of his arrest and did not have a valid driver’s license.

A pre-trial conference is scheduled for March 16. Bond is set at $15,000 cash or surety.

Starting at $3.50/week.
