Iron County closes its courthouse to public

CRYSTAL FALLS — The Iron County Board on Tuesday declared a local state of emergency in response to the coronavirus.

The 5-0 decision positions the county to seek additional resources should the situation worsen. Neighboring Dickinson County made the same move Monday.

The county — and the entire Upper Peninsula — for now does not have a confirmed case of COVID-19.

But downstate Michigan on Tuesday has 11 new COVID-19 cases, raising the number to 65 in 15 counties, while Wisconsin has its numbers of cases jump from 47 to 72 in one day.

The county courthouse also will be closed to the public effective immediately through 4 p.m. April 14, the date of the next county board meeting.

County staff will be available via telephone to assist the public. Business also can be done by mail or email.

The county clerk’s office is 906-875-3221. Other numbers are available on the county’s website at https://ironmi.org/.

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer on Monday issued a ban on dine-in customers at restaurants and closed all bars, movie theaters, gyms and other sports facilities in the state to reduce the spread of the virus.

Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers followed suit Tuesday, ordering a statewide ban on all gatherings of more than 10 people as of 5 p.m., and closing all bars and restaurants except for delivery and pickup orders.

In a related action, the board was told Tuesday the sheriff’s department has closed its office to public traffic until further notice. The department still can be reached by phone at 906-875-0650.

Starting at $3.50/week.
