School districts take steps following governor’s order

Area school officials are trying to address student needs after Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced Thursday that Michigan schools would close through April 5 as the state tries to deal with the coronavirus outbreak.

An email to parents and guardians from Breitung Township Schools Superintendent Craig Allen stated all Kingsford schools would be inaccessible unless otherwise communicated.

The Woodland Child Care Center also is closed until further notice. Staff and college- or high-school age students willing to assist families with daycare should call Child Care Center Director Sharon Quick.

All athletic and club events or activities are postponed or canceled during the closure.

But resources for continued student education and nutrition were under consideration, Allen said.

“We want to thank you for your patience and understanding as we continue to work through a fluid and ever-changing situation,” Allen wrote.

The Iron Mountain School District is posting updates at https://www.imschools.org/covid-19.html. The district also posted a parent survey regarding a meal program to start Monday. The school is scheduling specific days for meals to be picked up by parents or guardians of Iron Mountain students.

Forest Park Superintendent Becky Waters stated in a release that only employees would be allowed in the school during its closure as the transportation and custodial staff deep clean classrooms, desks, gymnasiums and locker rooms, among other things.

The food service and transportation departments are working on meal preparation and delivery for students, Waters said.

All Forest Park programs as well as extracurricular and community activities are suspended until school resumes.

“The absolute safety, health and well-being of our students and staff are of utmost importance at all times,” Waters stated.

West Iron County Superintendent Christopher Thomson said staff would follow health official recommendations to mitigate the transmission of COVID-19 so students would be able to return to school April 6.

On its Facebook page, Norway-Vulcan Area Schools indicated it would use email to communicate detailed information to families.

The North Dickinson School District will offer pre-packaged breakfast and lunch for students during the closure. The food will be available for pick up only. Detailed information has been posted at http://www.go-nordics.com/.
