Breitung prepares to reopen parks
IRON MOUNTAIN — Breitung Township plans to join neighboring municipalities in reopening its parks Wednesday while still maintaining COVID-19 guidelines.
Signs will be posted reminding park patrons to practice social distancing — using pavilions, park equipment and other amenities at their own risk.
“We have to do our part in working with the group in Dickinson County as we move forward to reopen,” Superintendent Steve Mulka said during a township board teleconference meeting Monday.
Keeping with past practice, portable bathrooms will be installed at each site. Efforts will be made to sanitize playground equipment, but board members noted only so much can be done.
After a lengthy discussion, it was agreed the township hall in Quinnesec will stay closed for now to the general public.
The board does plan, however, to have its June 22 meeting at the hall, with a call-in option provided. The vote to have an in-person meeting was 5-2, with Treasurer Carol Taylor and Trustee Dave Soderbloom objecting.
“If something should change (with the coronavirus), it wouldn’t happen,” Supervisor Denny Olson said.
In other business, the board approved a $500 donation to the Sons of American Legion Squadron 50 for the July 4 fireworks display in Iron Mountain, as well as a $250 participant fee for the Dickinson Area Economic Development Association’s Loyal to Local program.
