Dickinson, Norway cooperate in floodplain management

IRON MOUNTAIN — The city of Norway will continue to participate in a national flood insurance program through the Federal Emergency Management Agency under an intergovernmental agreement with Dickinson County.

The county board Monday adopted a resolution that designates the county’s construction code commission to administer, apply and enforce — on the city’s behalf — floodplain management regulations as contained in the state construction code.

Those responsibilities include reviewing permit applications to determine whether proposed building sites will be reasonably safe from flooding.

According to the resolution, participation in the program provides for the availability of flood insurance, as well as federal funds or loans. A floodplain means any land area susceptible to being inundated by water from any source.

In other action, the county board:

— Authorized District Court Judge Julie LaCost to fill an upcoming vacancy of the deputy magistrate/district court clerk position, due to retirement, and an upcoming probation officer vacancy, due to a resignation.

— Authorized paying Upper Peninsula Resource Conservation and Development Council dues of $350. Board Chairman Henry Wender appointed Commissioner Barbara Kramer as the county’s representative to the council and Controller Brian Bousley as the alternate. The council identifies resource and land use issues, working with local communities to strike a balance between the management of natural resources and economic development.

— Approved $6,724 for Michigan Association of Counties annual dues. MAC is the voice for Michigan counties at the state and federal level, providing legislative support on key issues. The organization also advances education, communication and cooperation among county government officials

— Approved Debonaire Inc. selling a Ford Airport hangar to Robert C. Dillman MMST, LLC of Lake Geneva, Wis.
