Region has dozen new COVID-19 positives on both sides of border

The Michigan COVID-19 data site Thursday added 12 more positives in the Upper Peninsula, while Wisconsin counties in the region had the same number of new cases listed by health officials in that state.

Marinette County in Wisconsin again led the region in new cases with six to top 200, with 202 to date. Wisconsin’s Iron County, which has seen a recent spike, was given three new cases by the state and by afternoon reported on its Facebook page it had 42 positives, two more than the state’s total.

Also in Wisconsin, Florence County Public Health officials confirmed a fifth COVID-19 positive, though the state had listed the case earlier. The individual is older than 40 years and in isolation, officials stated in a news release. “No further information is being released to protect the person’s privacy. The case is unrelated to previous positive cases and there was no business or establishment contact in Florence County,” officials said.

Additional cases listed by the state in the Upper Peninsula included four in Marquette to reach 103; two each in Delta and Dickinson counties, with Dickinson posting those new positives on Wednesday afternoon; and one each in Menominee, Houghton, Gogebic and Ontonagon.

For the Upper Peninsula, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services data site Thursday had Ontonagon and Keweenaw counties with two confirmed virus case each; Luce County three confirmed cases; Alger County three confirmed cases and two probable; Baraga County with five confirmed cases; Schoolcraft County with eight confirmed cases; Iron County 10 confirmed cases and one death; Mackinac County 12 confirmed cases and one probable; Chippewa County 21 confirmed cases and four probable; Houghton County 34 confirmed cases and five probable; Dickinson County 36 confirmed cases, one probable and two deaths; Gogebic County 42 confirmed cases, six probable and a death; Delta County 43 confirmed cases, 13 probable and three deaths; Menominee County 58 confirmed cases and four probable; and Marquette County 103 confirmed cases, seven probable and 11 deaths. State numbers are updated daily but can lag behind local reports or have other discrepancies.

The MDHHS also earlier separately had prison inmates as positive in Luce and Chippewa counties.

Using strictly the state figures, the Upper Peninsula as of Thursday has had 384 confirmed COVID-19 cases with 18 deaths.

The MDHHS reported 699 confirmed new COVID-19 cases in Michigan on Thursday for a total of 75,947 to date. The state had seven new deaths Thursday — including six that happened earlier but recently were verified through vital records and testing, according to the MDHHS — for 6,148 to date.

According to the Dickinson-Iron District Health Department, Dickinson County as of Wednesday had 36 confirmed COVID-19 positives, with five recovered, two deaths and 29 cases still active. Iron County has 10 positives, with four recovered, one death and five still active.

Dickinson County Healthcare System as of Thursday showed six cases from Dickinson County and 10 cases from other counties; those counties are not identified. DCHS has tested 2,013 people for COVID-19, with 16 positive, 1,933 negative and 64 results still pending. DCHS noted there are several additional sources of testing in Dickinson County.

For Wisconsin counties in the region, the state Department of Health Services’ COVID-19 data site Thursday listed Marinette County with 202 cases and three deaths; Forest County with 53 cases and four deaths; Iron County 40 cases and one death; Vilas County 21 cases; and Florence County five cases. As with the Michigan data, the state numbers are updated daily but can lag behind local reports.

Wisconsin had 1,052 new cases Thursday for a total of 45,899 to date, according to the state DHS data site. The state recorded 13 new COVID-19 deaths to reach 878 to date.
