Marinette County virus cases continue to climb

Highest rate statewide

Wisconsin health officials recorded a jump of 30 new COVID-19 positives in Marinette County, as it continues to lead the region in virus activity with 479 total cases as of Friday.

The Green Bay Press-Gazette reported this week that Marinette County through Tuesday had by far the highest rate statewide of new cases per 100,000 residents over the past seven and 14 days.

The Wisconsin Department of Health Services said there are eight ongoing public health investigations in Marinette County — four at long-term care facilities, three at non-health care workplaces and one at a site listed as “other,” which could be a child care center, restaurant, church or event space, according to the Press-Gazette.

In other Wisconsin counties in the region, the state’s COVID-19 data site showed three new cases in Vilas County and two each in Iron and Florence counties; the Florence County Health Department added three new cases to the tally on its Facebook page to reach 16 positives, three more than the state’s total. Vilas County listed two new cases on its Facebook page for a total of 77.

New cases in the Upper Peninsula included eight in Menominee; six in Marquette County; five in Delta County; three in Ontonagon County; two each in Gogebic, Houghton and Mackinac counties; and one each in Alger and Luce counties, according to figures on the Michigan Health and Human Services’ COVID-19 data site. The state also revised Dickinson County’s total to remove three cases, leaving it at 58 positives, one less than local health officials have reported.

For the Upper Peninsula, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services’ COVID-19 data site Friday had Keweenaw County with two confirmed cases and one probable; Luce and Baraga counties, five confirmed cases; Schoolcraft County, 12 confirmed cases and one

probable; Alger County, 15 confirmed and two probable; Ontonagon County, 20 confirmed and one probable; Iron County, 20 confirmed cases and one death; Mackinac County, 22 confirmed cases and five probable; Chippewa County, 31 confirmed cases and 13 probable; Houghton County, 46 confirmed cases and seven probable; Dickinson County, 58 confirmed cases, one probable and two deaths; Delta County, 88 confirmed cases, 23 probable and three deaths; Gogebic County, 124 confirmed cases, eight probable and a death; Menominee County, 144 confirmed cases and 21 probable; and Marquette County, 170 confirmed cases, 14 probable and 11 deaths. State numbers are updated daily but can lag behind local reports or have other discrepancies.

The MDHHS also earlier separately had prison inmates who were positive in Luce and Chippewa counties.

Using mostly state figures Friday, the Upper Peninsula has had 764 confirmed COVID-19 cases with 18 deaths.

The MDHHS reported 748 confirmed new COVID-19 cases in Michigan on Friday for a total of 91,140 to date. The state added 11 new deaths Friday for a total of 6,300.

For Wisconsin counties in the region, the state DHS’ COVID-19 data site Friday had Marinette County with 479 cases and five deaths; Iron County 78 cases and one death; Vilas County 69 cases; Forest County 60 cases and four deaths; and Florence County 12 cases. As with the Michigan data, the state numbers are updated daily but can lag behind local reports or have other discrepancies. Vilas County, for example, lists 77 positives, eight more than the state figures.

Wisconsin recorded 1,021 new cases Friday for a total of 64,227 to date, according to the state DHS data site. The state had seven new COVID-19 deaths Friday to reach 1,018 to date.

According to the Dickinson-Iron District Health Department, Dickinson County as of Friday has had 59 confirmed COVID-19 positives, with five more recovered to reach 27, two deaths and 30 cases still active. Iron County has had 20 positives, with nine recovered, one death and 10 still active.

Dickinson County Healthcare System as of Friday showed 18 cases from Dickinson County and 18 cases from other counties; those counties are not identified. DCHS has tested 2,720 people for COVID-19, with 36 positive, 2,617 negative and 67 results still pending. DCHS noted there are several additional sources of testing in Dickinson County.
