Back to school, again: Dickinson students return to classes for third time

Three of the four public school districts in Dickinson County plan to resume in-person classes Monday for most of their elementary and middle school grades.

North Dickinson County School in Felch Township already had kindergarten through eighth-grade students come back this past Monday.

But high school students in all four districts remain on remote learning through Dec. 8, to comply with a state health department order that took effect Nov. 18.

And grades six through eight in the Norway-Vulcan Area Schools won’t be able to return until the high school levels do “due to the schedule we are using for online learning and the manner in which we share staff between the middle and high schools,” Superintendent Lou Steigerwald said in a letter to families and staff.

Iron Mountain posted on its website that special education and English language learners in ninth through 12th grades will be back in class as well.

Dickinson County schools had switched to remote learning Nov. 9 on the recommendation of local health officials as COVID-19 cases surged in the region. It was the second shutdown this school year and came only a week after in-person classes had come back into session.

In their messages to families, administrators in all four districts indicated those who prefer to continue with remote learning will be allowed that option but need to contact their schools.

The Dickinson-Iron Intermediate School District plans to return to in-person classes for Head Start and Great Start Readiness on Tuesday. Early Head Start will return to an in-person/virtual weekly rotation, with further details to be announced.
