State lists 228 new virus cases across UP

The state’s COVID-19 data site Saturday showed the number of confirmed positives rose by 228 across the Upper Peninsula’s 15 counties.

New cases in the U.P. included 59 in Marquette County, 39 in Houghton County, 19 in Delta County, 18 in Dickinson County, 16 in both Baraga and Chippewa counties, 15 in Gogebic County, 12 in Iron County, 11 in Ontonagon County, nine in Menominee County, six in Alger County, five in Luce County, two in Schoolcraft County and one in Keweenaw County. The state also added two new deaths in both Dickinson and Delta counties.

In total for the U.P., the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services’ COVID-19 data site Saturday had Keweenaw County with 25 confirmed cases and one probable, and one death; Luce County, 77 confirmed cases and 32 probable, with one probable death; Alger County, 107 confirmed, 33 probable and one death; Schoolcraft County, 123 confirmed cases and five probable, plus one probable death; Chippewa County, 161 confirmed cases and 149 probable; Baraga County, 162 confirmed cases, 28 probable and four deaths; Mackinac County, 146 confirmed cases and 41 probable; Ontonagon County, 178 confirmed, 20 probable and one death; Gogebic County, 393 confirmed cases and 150 probable, six confirmed deaths and 10 probable deaths; Iron County, 514 confirmed cases and 33 probable, 24 confirmed deaths and four probable; Menominee County, 819 confirmed cases, 86 probable and seven deaths; Houghton County, 925 confirmed cases, 188 probable, eight confirmed deaths and one probable; Dickinson County, 912 confirmed cases and 27 probable, 25 confirmed deaths and one probable; Marquette County, 1,393 confirmed cases, 189 probable and 19 deaths; and Delta County, 1,505 confirmed cases and 167 probable, 38 confirmed deaths and seven probable. State numbers are updated daily but can lag behind local reports or have other discrepancies.

Using only the state figures Saturday, the Upper Peninsula has had 7,440 confirmed COVID-19 cases to date and 134 deaths.

The MDHHS reported 6,225 confirmed new COVID-19 cases in Michigan on Saturday for a total of 207,794 to date. The state added 65 new deaths Saturday — including 42 that happened earlier but recently were verified through vital records and testing, according to the MDHHS — for a total of 7,578.

The MDHHS no longer updates figures on Sundays.

For Wisconsin counties in the region, that state’s COVID-19 data site this weekend had 90 new cases in Marinette County, 65 in Vilas County, 17 in Forest and Iron counties and 10 in Florence County

The Wisconsin Department of Health Services on Sunday had Marinette County with 2,205 confirmed cases, 162 probable cases and 19 deaths; Vilas County, 819 confirmed, 22 probable and eight deaths; Forest County, 577 confirmed, 35 probable and 11 deaths; Iron County, 259 confirmed, 49 probable and five deaths, one probable; and Florence County, 249 confirmed, 14 probable and eight deaths. As with the Michigan data, the state numbers are updated daily but can lag behind local reports or have other discrepancies.

Wisconsin had 7,065 new positives Saturday — another new single-day record — and 4,280 on Sunday for a total of 267,410. The state added 45 new COVID-19 deaths Saturday and 11 on Sunday to reach 2,312.

Wisconsin has had 1,180 new cases per 100,000 people over the past two weeks, which ranks third in the country behind North Dakota and South Dakota for new cases per capita, Johns Hopkins University researchers reported.
