Man arrested in IM after two-county chase

IRON MOUNTAIN — A 28-year-old man was arrested Wednesday morning after a high-speed chase that began in Florence, Wis., and ended with the driver barricaded in an Iron Mountain residence.

The Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office was notified about 10:38 p.m. Tuesday that the Florence County sheriff’s deputies was pursuing a 2002 Jeep Liberty headed for the Michigan-Wisconsin border, according to a news release from the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office.

Iron Mountain deputies deployed stop sticks at the state line on U.S. 2 near the M-95 junction. The Jeep ran over the stop sticks and hit a patrol vehicle, damaging it enough it had to be towed, the release stated.

The Jeep continued east into with Iron Mountain deputies taking up the chase at a low rate of speed, as two of the Jeep’s tires appeared disabled.

In the 500 block of Fifth Street in Iron Mountain, the driver got out of the vehicle and barricaded himself inside a residence, the news release stated.

The Dickinson County Critical Incident Response Team was brought in as deputies attempted to negotiate with the man, who reportedly claimed he had a child hostage that he would kill if his demands were not met, according to the news release.

The man was identified as a 28-year-old on parole in Michigan, the release stated.

Investigators determined he was alone in the residence. After the man severed negotiations, the CIRT team entered the residence about 1:24 a.m. Wednesday and took him into custody without incident.

The man was treated at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital for minor injuries before he was transferred to the Dickinson County Correctional Facility on numerous charges.

The man’s name was not released pending his arraignment.

The Dickinson and Florence County sheriff’s offices were assisted by the Iron Mountain Police Department, Kingsford Public Safety, Michigan State Police Iron Mountain Post and Integrity Care EMS.
