Active virus cases shrink in Dickinson, Iron counties

More than 50% over age 65 have gotten first shot in area

Dickinson County is down to 36 active COVID-19 cases, while Iron County has only 14, according to local health officials.

The Dickinson-Iron County Health Department on Monday reported six new cases in Dickinson County and 31 recoveries, while Iron County had two new positives and 14 recoveries since the last update Feb. 22.

The DIDHD on Monday had Dickinson County at 2,136 confirmed positives and 241 probable cases, with 2,274 recovered, 67 deaths and 36 cases still active. For Iron County, the DIDHD had 868 confirmed cases and 63 probables, with 871 recovered, 46 deaths and 14 still active.

After several weeks with the COVID-19 vaccines available to the top priority groups, the DIDHD posted Monday that as of Feb. 25 that 56% of those age 65 to 74 and 52.2% of those ages 75 and older in the two counties have begun the vaccination series, for an average of 54.2% of the population age 65 and older, or 3,118, having received at least their first shot; 28.6%, or 1,648, have completed both shots. The general population of the two counties is at 22%, or 4,579, having started the vaccine and 13.6%, or 2,832, finishing both shots.

On Monday, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services’ COVID-19 site had 16 new confirmed positives in the Upper Peninsula since last updating figures Saturday: 10 in Delta County, four in Houghton County and one each in Menominee and Gogebic counties. Marquette and Gogebic counties each had a new death.

Using only the state’s figures, the Upper Peninsula as of Monday has had 16,424 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 386 deaths.

Across the U.P., the MDHHS data site Monday had Keweenaw County at 115 confirmed cases and 28 probable, and one death and one probable death; Luce County, 132 confirmed cases and 89 probable, one probable death; Schoolcraft County, 229 confirmed cases and 28 probable, four deaths and one probable; Alger County, 277 confirmed, 157 probable and one death, four probable; Mackinac County, 290 confirmed cases and 151 probable, three deaths; Ontonagon County, 358 confirmed, 52 probable and 19 deaths, one probable; Baraga County, 507 confirmed cases, 99 probable and 32 deaths; Chippewa County, 722 confirmed cases and 1,031 probable, and 23 deaths, four probable; Iron County, 866 confirmed cases and 61 probable, 40 confirmed deaths and nine probable; Gogebic County, 929 confirmed cases and 340 probable, 20 confirmed deaths and 28 probable; Menominee County, 1,617 confirmed cases, 263 probable and 35 deaths, two probable; Houghton County, 2,131 confirmed cases, 523 probable, 33 confirmed deaths and eight probable; Dickinson County, 2,131 confirmed cases and 240 probable, 55 confirmed deaths and 14 probable; Delta County, 2,664 confirmed cases and 476 probable, 65 confirmed deaths and 19 probable; and Marquette County, 3,456 confirmed cases, 497 probable and 55 deaths, one probable. State numbers are updated almost daily but can lag behind local reports or have other discrepancies.

The MDHHS on Monday posted 1,169 confirmed new coronavirus positives in Michigan for the two-day period for a total of 589,150. The state added 12 new deaths Monday to reach 15,534.

For Wisconsin counties in the region, the state Department of Health Services’ COVID-19 data site Monday had only four new positives in Vilas County.

The DHS on Monday had Marinette County with 3,981 confirmed cases, 383 probable cases and 63 deaths, three probable deaths; Vilas County, 2,140 confirmed, 123 probable and 36 deaths, two probable; Forest County, 925 confirmed, 69 probable and 23 deaths, three probable; Iron County, 541 confirmed, 117 probable and 20 deaths, 19 probable; and Florence County, 434 confirmed, 34 probable and 12 deaths. As in Michigan, state numbers are updated daily but can lag behind local reports or have other discrepancies.

Wisconsin added 308 new positives Monday for a total of 564,268 confirmed COVID-19 cases to date. The state recorded no new deaths for a second straight day Monday to remain at 6,412.
