IM approves contract for actuarial studies
IRON MOUNTAIN — A Wisconsin firm will be hired to perform actuarial evaluations for the city of Iron Mountain through 2026.
The evaluations are required every two years for the city’s supplemental pensions and other post employment benefits, including health insurance. Key Benefits Concepts of Wales, Wis., will do the work at a total cost of $26,150.
In 2019, KBC’s charge for the evaluation was $8,630, City Manager Jordan Stanchina said. With the six-year agreement, this year’s cost would be $8,550.
Among other things, KBC will provide an estimate of the city’s unfunded liabilities and share the information with the state under the Protecting Local Government Retirement and Benefits Act. That 2017 law set guidelines to identify pensions and retirement health plans that are underfunded. In some cases, corrective action plans are required.
The city also requested an actuarial quote from Gabriel, Roeder, Smith & Co. of Southfield, but received no response, said Heather Lieburn, chief finance officer.
In other action at its June 7 meeting, the city council:
— Heard no objections during a public hearing and approved a request to abandon a portion of Sixth Street right-of-way between Stephenson Avenue and Chapin Street. Bill Neuens Enterprises plans to develop the site into the Ice Cream Barn, Stanchina said. There are no utilities within the platted road, he added.
— Approved an alley and parking lot closure from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, June 26, for the grand opening of the 41 Lumber design center at 321 S. Stephenson Ave.
— Learned the Downtown Development Authority has chosen Mindy Sue Wittock to succeed Amber Pipp as program director.
— Accepted an agreement with Gov Pros of Detroit to provide credit card processing for online payments of property tax bills. There is no cost to the city, but a 2.75% fee is charged to the public. The current vendor, ACI Payments Inc. (formerly Official Payments) of Auburn, Ala., is no longer approved by the city’s BS&A financial software, Stanchina explained. ACI’s fee to the public had been 3%.
— Accepted a quote from PK Contracting of Troy for street line striping and pavement markings at a total cost of $9,877.
— Agreed to seek bids for a lawn mower and a dump trailer for public works.
