GRAND MARAIS — About 6 acres of national park land and adjacent state forest lands burned in a wildfire Monday near the Twelvemile Beach campground in the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, the National Park Service reported.

A U.S. Coast Guard vessel out of the Marquette station reported seeing the fire about 3 p.m. Monday near Twelvemile Beach campground in Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, according to an NPS news release. Michigan Department of Natural Resources firefighters responded with assistance from Burt Township Fire and PRNL park rangers.

“Thank you to all our agency partners who reported and helped us keep this fire under control,” Chief Ranger Joseph Hughes said in the release. “I would like to remind all park visitors to recreate safely. Drivers and visitors should slow down and use caution in the area.”

Investigations into the start of the fire are ongoing, officials said. Firefighters were on site Tuesday conducting mop-up operations.

Large amounts of smoke and limited visibility may affect the area for the next couple of days near Twelvemile Beach campground and along Highway 58 near Kingston Lake campground, according to the National Park Service.
