NORWAY — The Norway City Council on Monday congratulated the Norway U-10 Little League team for their part in the Michigan 9-10 Little League State Tournament championship at Marion Park in Norway.
The council passed a resolution recognizing team members for their accomplishments, including advancing to the final game against Greater Bay Little League on July 28.
Though Norway lost 4-2, the team “played with the highest level of sportsmanship and competitive spirit, making them worthy ambassadors for Norway Little League,” the resolution stated.
The council agreed the team, present at the meeting in full uniform, showed composure in the face of defeat.
“You guys have done a tremendous job,” Council Member Bret Kraemer said. “It’s something you can have forever. No one can take it from you.”
“People across the state are talking about how you handled yourselves,” City Attorney Grant Carlson added.
City Manager Ray Anderson asked each member of the team provide their full name for inclusion in the meeting minutes so they may be “forever memorialized” in the city’s documents.
In other business, the council:
— Had a public hearing on applying to the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development office in Gladstone to receive grant funds for a police squad car. While in the past the city has been eligible for a 40% grant, this year Norway qualified for a 55% grant. The city plans to purchase a 2021 squad car with a light bar, siren, camera and radar unit, among other things. The vehicle and equipment costs are estimated at about $42,200, plus $800 for shipping. The grant would cover $23,200, with the city paying $19,800.
— Approved buying a portable radio from Elcom Systems for the city police department at a cost not to exceed $2,919.50. The radio is a budgeted item.
— Appointed Council Member Rico Meneghini as an alternate council representative to the city’s Zoning Board of Appeals for the length of the current council term.
— Sold .2 acres of city-owned property to Tom Hinds for $750 and .21 acres to Ken and Sue Neuens for $1,000. Both properties were adjacent to the respective owner’s lots.
