Fire doused at IM house
IRON MOUNTAIN — A fire in a vacant house at 408 Fifth St. was brought under control in less than a half-hour after Iron Mountain firefighters were called at 9:38 p.m. Tuesday, said Jeff Friedenstab, deputy director of fire services.
No injuries were reported.
The first Iron Mountain Fire Department engine with a crew of four firefighters arrived within three minutes of the dispatch and found heavy fire pushing from the first floor of the 2 1/2-story structure containing two apartments, Friedenstab said. Six off-duty firefighters also responded, making a total of 10 firefighters manning two engines, a utility pickup and a brush truck.
Their response included a search throughout the house for possible victims. It was determined to have been vacant for a few months, Friedenstab said.
The fire was declared under control at 10:07 p.m., although crews remained on scene extinguishing hot spots until 11:47 p.m.
Assisting were officers from the Iron Mountain police and public works departments, Integrity Care EMS, We Energies, DTE Energy and Michigan State Police.
“The fire origin is believed to be on the first floor and cause is under investigation,” Friedenstab said.
No damage estimate was yet available.
