Iron Mountain council agrees to form new arts committee

IRON MOUNTAIN — An advisory panel will be appointed to help coordinate public art initiatives in Iron Mountain.

The request came from city resident Sarah Rice, who said the volunteer committee can work with Friends of the Braumart, Borderland Arts and Art for All, among others, to bring more art into the community and celebrate Iron Mountain’s cultural heritage.

The city council agreed Monday to form the Public Arts Advisory Committee under terms of the City Charter. The plan calls for the council and committee to pursue public and private sources to fund initiatives and have a positive impact on the community’s quality of life.

Up to 11 members may be appointed to help integrate public art concepts into the community and foster enjoyment of art.

In other action, the council:

— Accepted a bid of $35,195 from ERA Chevrolet of Norway for a 3/4 ton pickup truck for the cemetery. The truck will replace a 1977 vehicle that is “probably beyond its last legs,” City Manager Jordan Stanchina said. With the acquisition, the city can also move a 2015 half-ton vehicle from the cemetery into the public works fleet. The price is higher than anticipated and delivery may not be until fall or later, but the council saw no advantage in delaying.

— Approved buying storm sewer materials at an estimated cost of $15,500 to help facilitate construction of a TownPlace Suites by Marriott hotel at 200 S. Stephenson Ave. The site contains a storm sewer that must be moved and the developer will share in the cost, Stanchina explained. The city is buying the materials from Upper Peninsula Concrete Pipe Co. of Escanaba, while the developer’s contractor will be responsible for installation. The $16 million hotel project was announced last fall by IMT Lodging and Marquette-based Veridea Group.

— Accepted a $8,408 quote from UP International Trucks Inc. of Iron Mountain to repair the front differential on a 2015 International 7400 plow truck.

Starting at $3.50/week.
