No opposition in Dickinson, Iron County officials’ races

IRON MOUNTAIN — Five incumbents on the Dickinson County Board are running for reelection without opposition.

The commissioners — four Republicans and a Democrat — have no challengers in the Aug. 2 primary. They’ll have no opposition in the Nov. 8 general election unless candidates without party affiliation file petitions by July 21, or write-in contenders emerge from the primary.

The board members — Henry Wender of Breitung Township, Joe Stevens of Kingsford, John Degenaer Jr. of Norway and Barbara Kramer and Ann Martin, both of Iron Mountain — have mostly served a decade or more. Wender, the current chairman, is the longest-tenured at 33 years. Degenaer is the only Democrat.

In other races, Carol Bronzyk of Quinnesec will seek election as a Republican to the clerk-register of deeds position she has had since Feb. 28. She has no opposition to date.

Bronzyk was appointed by Circuit Court Judges Mary Barglind and Christopher Ninomiya after the retirement of Dolly Cook, a Democrat who had been in office 31 years. Previously, Bronzyk was the county’s deputy clerk and circuit court clerk for 18 years.

Michael Ghere is the lone candidate for county mine inspector, running as a Republican. In January he succeeded Steve Smith, a Republican who retired from the part-time position after nine years.

Barglind has no opposition as she seeks another six-year term on the circuit court bench, covering Dickinson, Iron and Menominee counties. She was first elected to the non-partisan judgeship in 1998 and since reelected three times.

Just three candidates have filed for Iron County offices in the Aug. 2 primary. They include incumbent District Attorney Chad A. DeRouin, who is running as a Republican. DeRouin was appointed in May 2021 after Democrat Melissa Powell resigned.

Patti Peretto of Iron River Township, a Democrat, is seeking reelection to the Iron County Board in District 1. The four other incumbents on the board have campaigned in the past without party affiliation. They are Jeff Ofsdahl, Mike Stafford, Jacob Conery and Mark Stauber.

Charles Battan is a Democratic candidate for reelection to the Iron County Road Commission.
